Bryan Singer Hit with Big Backlash After Responding to Bohemian Rhapsody Win

Posted 2019/01/08 14 0

Bryan Singer is catching some heat for taking credit for Bohemian Rhapsody winning big at the Golden Globes over the weekend. The Queen biopic walked away with a Best Picture win in the drama category, with Rami Malek taking home the Best Actor award for his portrayal of late frontman Freddie Mercury. Singer was fired from the movie just weeks before production was set to wrap and he wasn’t mentioned at all during the ceremony. Yet, he took to Instagram to take what he perceived as his fair share of the credit. However, quite a few people are calling him out.

Commenters have been going to town on the Instagram post. While some have defended Bryan Singer, many have voiced their concern and distaste for Singer and his decision to take credit for the awards the movie took home. User bbelemjian had this to say in the comments, for example.

“I congratulate everyone who worked on the film and didn’t disappear for days at a time. You were fired for a reason.”

Since thanking the Golden Globes for the win, Bryan Singer posted a second Instagram message that features footage from the big Live Aid rehearsal with all the actors. The clip kicks off with the line, ‘No time for losers.’ Which definitely looks and sounds like he’s using this video to answer back at all the criticism in a clever way. The video is an interesting behind-the-scenes glimpse at some of the work Singer also put into the movie, calling out the fact that he did actually do some work on the movie, including pulling the biopic’s biggest moment together. Over the past few weeks, leading up to the Golden Globes, the disgraced filmmaker has been showing off quite a few behind the scenes moments, as if to assure everyone that he was really there, doing his job at some point during production.

While Bryan Singer has had more than his share of controversies over the last year or so, having been accused of sexual misconduct and even rape on different occasions, his firing from Bohemian Rhapsody supposedly didn’t have anything to do with such issues. The filmmaker reportedly was disappearing from set for days at a time. A fight with star Rami Malek was said to be the last straw. At that point, Eddie the Eagle director Dexter Fletcher was brought in to finish the movie. User xxmanonf1rexx had this to say on that note.

“Bro you didn’t even finish the movie. You better give Dexter the credit he deserves!”

Unquestionably, the sexual misconduct allegations, which Bryan Singer has denied, have fueled the controversy, even if that isn’t why he was fired. Unfortunately, due to Directors Guild of America rules, Singer retained his director credit. The situation didn’t go unnoticed, especially since Singer wasn’t thanked or even mentioned in any of the acceptance speeches at the Golden Globes. Rami Malek was asked about his decision to omit Singer from his speech and had this to say.

“There was only one thing we needed to do, celebrate Freddie Mercury. He is a marvel. Nothing was going to compromise us. We’re giving him the love, celebration and adulation he deserves.”

Bohemian Rhapsody faced additional controversy for its inaccuracies in regards to the story of Queen and, specifically, Freddie Mercury’s life. Despite that, the movie went on to become the most successful biopic of all time, bringing in $743 million worldwide. Controversy aside, given the recent big night at the Golden Globes, it’s highly likely that Bohemian Rhapsody will wind up scoring some major nominations later this month when the Oscar nominations are announced. So this Bryan Singer mess is far from over. Feel free to check out Bryan Singer’s Instagram post, as well as the comments below.
