It looks like Warner Bros. is keeping their planned Batgirl flick on the move as today we have word that the powers that be behind the scenes are trying to snag Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker star Daisy Ridley as their Barbara Gordon. For those of you that might not know, this planned Batgirl motion picture has already had its fair share of drama behind the scenes even at such an infant stage.

Originally The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron writer-director (and Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator) Joss Whedon was all set to write and direct a new version of the classic character. But then Whedon’s sure-to-be tongue in cheek version of the project was canceled after the Dollhouse and Firefly creator “simply couldn’t find the right story.” From there, Warner Bros. quickly set a new screenwriter in place for the film with Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) writer Christina Hodson now working on retooling the potential franchise starter.

And speaking of Hodson and Warner Bros.’ planned Batgirl movie, recently the screenwriter commented that she’s, ‘loving writing it.’ She went onto say, ‘I can say that it’s a total joy to work on. I love the character. And every day I’m finding new things to love and get excited about.’

For those of you that might have forgotten, never knew, or just blocked out the memory completely, this planned Batgirl motion picture will not be the first time we’ve seen Barbara Gordon don her Batsuit on the big screen. That “honor” goes to Clueless actress Alicia Silverstone from Falling Down and The Lost Boys director Joel Schumacher’s 1997 horror-show Batman and Robin starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, George Clooney, Chris O’Donnell, and Uma Thurman. But the less said about that movie, the better.

Whether or not Daisy Ridley is genuinely in the running for the role of Barbara Gordon in Warner Brothers’ planned Batgirl movie remains to be seen. But until we hear more, we can always just go back to counting down the days until Daisy Ridley returns as Rey in director J.J. Abrams upcoming Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. That film is all set to see Abrams return to the director chair after sitting out Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Abrams will helm this final entry from a screenplay he co-wrote along with Argo screenwriter, Chris Terrio. Abrams is also producing this new Star Wars movie alongside Michelle Rejwan and Kathleen Kennedy.

Ridley’s costars are set to include the returns of Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Billie Lourd, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, and Carrie Fisher. Those actors will be joined this time around by franchise newcomers such as Dominic Monaghan, Richard E Grant as Allegiant General Pryde, and Keri Russell as Zorri Bliss. And let’s not forget the long-awaited returns for Star Wars legacies such as Billy Dee Williams as Lando Calrissian, and Ian McDiarmid as Palpatine / Darth Sidious. Walt Disney Studios will distribute the Lucasfilm Ltd. and Bad Robot Productions movie into a theater near you on December 20, 2019. This story comes to us via We Got This Covered.
