Far from Home Art Reveals Jake Gyllenhaal as Mysterio

Posted 2018/12/27 40 0

We have what may be our first official look at Mysterio in Spider-Man: Far from Home. Unfortunately, it likely isn’t what die-hard Marvel Comics fans were hoping for. Oscar-nominee Jake Gyllenhaal is playing the bad guy (or perhaps not bad guy, more on that in a minute) in the upcoming sequel and the studio has yet to show us how exactly the character is going to be portrayed. Now, a new promo image gives us a taste and, sad to say, something is missing.

The image isn’t actually of Jake Gyllenhaal in the movie. Instead, it’s official art in a magazine as part of a preview of the movie. Neck to toe, the Mysterio look is spot on, glowing orb hands and all. However, the character is not seen with his signature fishbowl helmet, which is going to be a sticking point for some. Were they really going to cast an A-list actor and put his head under such an arguably goofy helmet? Maybe not, but Aquaman, which is arguably one of the goofier looking superheroes in the history of comics, is making a ton of money at the box office right now with Jason Momoa in the traditional orange-gold and green suit, so why can’t Mysterio have his fishbowl look? That’s not to say that won’t come later, as it’s entirely possible that this image isn’t giving up the reveal just yet.

While many will surely focus on the helmet, the rest of the look is spot-on and very faithful. But what may not be so faithful is the idea of Mysterio being a bad guy. In the world of Marvel Comics, the master of illusion and deception is one of Spider-Man’s greatest foes. However, in a recent interview with Collider, Jake Gyllenhaal revealed that his character will be teaming up with Spider-Man and that “Mysterio’s a good guy in this.” Elaborating further, Gyllenhaal had this to say.

“Well there are these threats to the world, the Elemental creatures, and Mysterio is someone who knows about them and who wants to make sure that the world is safe from them, and Nick Fury asks him to come on and help because he’s the only one who really understands them in a way. And he teams up with the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man and unfortunately he has to make him become more than just a Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.”

As the title implies, Spider-Man: Far From Home sees Peter Parker, once again portrayed by Tom Holland, taking a trip to Europe, which means we’re going to see the franchise go international for the first time ever. But it’s not just going to be a showdown between the titular hero and a new threatening villain that fans have been dying to see on the big screen for some time. It may not be a showdown in the traditional sense at all, if Jake Gyllenhaal is to be taken at his word.

But would Marvel really be cool with him spoiling something so big? We’ll hopefully get some clues once the first trailer makes its way online. Spider-Man: Far From Home is directed by Jon Watts and is set to arrive in theaters on July 5, 2019. Be sure to check out the new image of Mysterio from Empire below.
