Green Goblin & Doctor Octopus Might Not Make It Into Spider-Man 3

Could we see the Green Goblin and/or Doctor Octopus brought into the Marvel Cinematic Universe someday, perhaps in the MCU’s Spider-Man 3? While there is no definitive answer right now, Spider-Man: Far From Home director Jon Watts and Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige have both weighed in on the topic. At this point in time, they both seem to think it’s best to focus on new villains, as opposed to ones that we’ve seen before, unless the story being told really calls for something from the past.

Doc Ock, as portrayed by Alfred Molina, was last seen in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2. As for Green Goblin, he was the main villain in the first live-action Spider-Man and also had a presence, in a different way, via James Franco’s Harry Osborn, in Spider-Man 3. He was also brought to life by Dane DeHaan in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. So he’s certainly been used quite a bit. When asked about those characters showing up in the future in a recent interview, Jon Watts had this to say.

“You always start by trying to show people something that they haven’t seen before, unless you have a really good reason, I think, to bring back someone we’ve seen before. Spider-Man has such a great rogue’s gallery that there’s a lot still I think to draw from. I mean, we also put Cyclone, Molten Man and Hydro Man in this movie, in a very roundabout way… Technically you could say [Mexico’s villain] was like Sandman. But yeah, it’s always about trying to find something new and just trying to push the envelope there, but I dunno, I dunno who it could be next.”

But for now, these are merely rumors. As Jon Watts points out, there are few characters in the history of comics that have such a great roster of villains, many of which we still haven’t seen on screen yet. Kraven the Hunter, Chameleon, Arcade and Hobgoblin are just a few examples. Speaking further on the topic, Kevin Feige explained that it all comes down to having the right story.

“It just depends on, is it the right story? Is that the right time? Is there the right angle to do it again in a way that feels fresh and doesn’t feel like, ‘Oh, here it is again.’ Because Spidey, as you know, better than anyone, has a great roster of villains. A great number of them, with Mysterio and Vulture being two of the best that hadn’t been brought to the screen before. I think it all depends on what the story is. It all depends on what the, what the angle is.”

It’s worth noting that there have been rumors swirling suggesting that Norman Osborn, the man behind Green Goblin, is going to be the MCU’s next big bad. Spider-Man: Far From Home will certainly pave the way to the MCU’s Spider-Man 3 and the possibilities for that movie seem endless right now. Who knows? If Jon Watts stays on board, maybe he’ll find that right story and we could see our new Dr. Otto Octavius or Norman Osborn. This news comes to us via CinemaBlend.
