Harry Styles & Ansel Elgort Amongst Frontrunners to Play Elvis in Baz Luhrmann’s Biopic

Several names are in the running to play Elvis Presley in an upcoming Warner Bros. movie, and a final decision will reportedly be made by next week. Director Baz Luhrmann (The Great Gatsby) filmed a group of actors for the part recently to screen each one’s potential ability to play Elvis. While it isn’t clear how many names overall were tested, there were four standout names who seem to be among the top candidates for the casting. According to a new report, the names being considered include Ansel Elgort, Austin Butler, Miles Teller, and Harry Styles.

Ansel Elgort is perhaps best known for co-starring with Shailene Woodley in the romantic drama The Fault in Our Stars and as the titular character in Baby Driver. Butler just recently hit the big screen in the zombie comedy movie The Dead Don’t Die and will next be seen in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Meanwhile, Teller previously played Mr. Fantastic in 2015’s Fantastic Four movie and has a role in the upcoming sequel Top Gun: Maverick.

As for Harry Styles, the musician-turned-actor is of course known for serving as the lead singer of One Direction before making his acclaimed movie debut in Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk. Now, Elvis fans can have fun debating which of these names would be the best choice while we all wait for an official decision from Luhrmann.

The untitled movie, co-written by Baz Luhrmann and Craig Pearce, will cover the relationship between Elvis and his veteran manager Colonel Tom Parker. While Parker did pull the world-famous singer out of poverty to help make him the superstar he would become, he also was reputed to have pocketed half of the singer’s earnings for himself. Reportedly, Tom Hanks is already attached to play Parker in the movie as the project now looks for its Elvis. Hanks obviously has the magic touch and always turns in a wonderful performance, so let’s hope he’ll have a good filming partner with whoever winds up starring alongside him.

This will not be the first time an actor has had the opportunity to play Elvis Presley. Kurt Russell turned in a legendary performance of the singer in John Carpenter’s 1979 TV movie Elvis, which earned him an Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor. Michael St. Gerard and Jonathan Rhys Meyers both played Elvis in separate TV shows about him as well, with the latter winning a Golden Globe Award for the performance. Russell also provided the voice of Elvis in Forrest Gump and Evil Dead star Bruce Campbell later played him in the horror comedy movie Bubba Ho-Tep.

Who ultimately ends up playing the King of Rock ‘n Roll in this new project from Warner Bros. remains to be seen, but hopefully they’ll do the King of Rock ‘n Roll proud. No word yet on when we can expect to see the movie hit the big screen, but hopefully we’ll at least soon know who our next theatrical Elvis will be. This information comes to us from Deadline.
