Idris Elba Is King Triton in Little Mermaid Fan Art & Fans Love This Idea

Posted 2019/07/06 7 0

Days after Halle Bailey was cast in the role of Ariel for the live-action remake of Disney’s the Little Mermaid, many fans are already calling for Idris Elba to play her father, King Triton. With the concept getting a lot of attention on Twitter, artist BossLogic took to his own account to release some fan art depicting Elba in the role. One look at the image makes it hard to deny Elba would in fact be fantastic for the part, matching it in looks on top of his acting ability. To be clear, there has been no official indication Elba has been cast or is in the running for the role, but if it’s up to the fans, the Luther star is a clear frontrunner to be the King of the Sea.

At this point in the casting phase of the production, only Halle Bailey has officially signed on. However, there have been many reports of other possible names finalizing deals to appear in the movie as other characters. Bridesmaids star Melissa McCarthy is in talks to play the villain of the movie, the sea witch Ursula, although rapper and actress Lizzo is also gunning for the role. Meanwhile, Jacob Tremblay (The Predator) is up for the part of Flounder while Awkwafina (Crazy Rich Asians) is in negotiations to play Scuttle. The coveted role of Prince Eric also remains to be cast, though Harry Styles had previously been rumored to be in consideration for the part.

Directed by Rob Marshall (Mary Poppins Returns), the upcoming iteration of The Little Mermaid will feature a very similar plot to the animated movie from 1989. It tells the story of a young mermaid woman with hopes of leaving the sea for life on land after she falls for a human prince. The remake will feature a mix of classic songs from the 1989 movie and new music from Lin-Manuel Miranda and Alan Menken. There’s no word yet on an official release date, but production is set to begin in early 2020.

Disney’s live-action remakes of their classic animated movies have proven to be highly profitable for the House of Mouse. Just recently, the new Aladdin made its way into theaters with Will Smith taking over the role of the Genie from Robin Williams. At this point in its theatrical run, the movie has already grossed almost $900 million at the box office in global ticket sales. Similar projects like Beauty and the Beast and Cinderella have also been big hits for the company. It was a matter of time before The Little Mermaid was next to be given the live-action movie treatment, and chances are, this will wind up being among the most successful yet.

Again, while fan reception has largely been positive to the idea of Idris Elba as King Triton, the concept is merely speculation at this time. There have been no reports of any actual negotiations taking place between Elba and Disney. Still, if that’s what ultimately ends up happening, there probably won’t be too many people complaining You can take a look the fan art of Elba as King Triton below, as well as his depictions of Halle Bailey as Ariel and Missy Elliott as Ursula, courtesy of BossLogic on Twitter.
