Josh Gad Responds to Colin Farrell’s The Batman Casting

Posted 2019/11/07 1 0

After previously campaigning to get the role for himself, Josh Gad has responded to the new reports of Colin Farrell negotiating to play Penguin in The Batman. At this time, Farrell’s potential casting is not a done deal, as the actor is reportedly in talks to play Oswald Cobblepot in the upcoming superhero movie from director Matt Reeves. Still, because the news has been going viral, Gad apparently felt it was necessary to respond, though he does so in a bit of a tongue-in-cheek manner. Acting almost oblivious to the reports, Gad tweeted a photo of fan art of himself as Penguin, adding the simple caption, “So… what’s new today?” You can take a look at it below.

Josh Gad has long been a favorite to play Penguin in The Batman or another live-action DC-based project, in part due to the actor’s constant lobbying on social media to get the part. For better or for worse, Gad confirmed several months back he would definitely not be appearing in The Batman as The Penguin, though it wasn’t clear if he had actually spoken with Reeves or anyone at Warner Bros. about the part. Prior to the new reports of Farrell’s potential casting, Jason Alexander had similarly volunteered himself for the part following Jonah Hill’s exit from the project, citing his Seinfeld character’s “experience” with marine biology. For whatever reason, those involved apparently see something in Farrell they weren’t seeing in Gad, Alexander, or any other actor.

If cast, Colin Farrell will join many other actors to have portrayed memorable versions of Oswald Cobblepot on both the big and small screens. Longtime fans of Batman will remember the Burgess Meredith version of the character from the original TV series from the 1960’s. The role was later reimagined by Tim Burton with Danny DeVito portraying a more grotesque version of Oswald, and the character remains one of the most memorable supervillains in all of superhero movie history. More recently, Robin Lord Taylor played a younger version of Oswald in the Batman prequel series Gotham, and his performance was widely considered by critics to be among the highlights of the series.

In addition to Farrell’s possible casting, Andy Serkis is also reportedly in talks to play the Wayne family butler, Alfred Pennyworth. Aside from Penguin, two major villains have been officially cast for The Batman as well, as Paul Dano will play The Riddler while Zoe Kravitz will take on Catwoman. On the hero side, Jeffrey Wright has also been cast as Commissioner James Gordon and will be operating the bat signal in the movie. They all join lead actor Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne, whose casting was the first to be officially announced for the project several months back.

We’ll all see how The Batman turns out when the movie is released on June 25, 2021. As for Gad, we won’t be seeing him in the movie, but we can still once again catch him as the voice of Olaf when Frozen 2 hits theaters on Nov. 22. This news comes to us from Josh Gad on Twitter.
